Guy Who?

So Guy Fawkes was the man who planned the infamous Gunpowder Plot against King James 1 in 1605 in the hopes to put a Catholic king on the throne.  The plot failed.  Fawkes was caught guarding the not-yet-smoking gunpowder and condemned to execution.  He took his own life just before his execution was to be exacted.
The plot was set for Nov 5, the day upon which this odd celebration has occurred ever since.  It is a holiday to thwarted terrorism.

Apparently people have long crafted a Guy (stuffed dummy) and carried it around town saying, "A penny for the Guy."  Then the Guy was burned over a bonfire.  According to many of my colleagues and students, Halloween seems to be overtaking Bonfire Night in practice. Many families celebrate both holidays.  In my opinion, bonfire night is still going strong.  There carnival was PACKED tonight.  I am so happy to have been able to enjoy my first and possibly last Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night, complete with a carnival and outstanding fireworks!  Thank you Inverurie!

"fun house"

A whirling display of color, light, and music.  How are these rides
the same all over the world?

This is like fishing for ducks at carnivals in the US.

Considerable pile of burnable material (once building and shipping
material)

There was so much accelerant that the fire smoked a bit at first.

Young and old marveled at the impressive sight!

Note the Guy on top of all the wood?  He is in for it.

I am sure in olden times, people were allowed to cavort near the
flames.  But today, the Inverurie fire department kept us far from
danger and behind a full fence.

I really love the contrast created by the light.

Note the flame:  It is the finger of accusation.  Guy Fawkes must die!

This is my friend Marie Claire, who kindly said she would join me for
this fun evening.  She was skeptical about my self-portrait taking skills!

I just liked the palm tree effect of this fireworks.

The fireworks went on and on and on.  They were
Most impressive!  I also like the juxtaposition
of the light over the Scotch Premier Carvers!
